THE ROLE

The primary purpose of this role is to develop AIM’s collective goals on behalf of its Members and the wider independent music community in the UK and beyond, and a strategic plan to achieve them.  Galvanise community support for initiatives and leverage the collective market share of the independent community to deliver added value to member businesses and the wider independent music community. 

To motivate the AIM team in delivering high-quality services to Members whilst promoting the values and mission of AIM’s community, including through advocacy and campaigning.

The CEO of aim will work with the Chair, the Board and its members to develop and implement a corporate strategy that represents the common agreed wishes of its Members.

ABOUT AIM

AIM is the not-for-profit trade body representing and supporting the UK’s independent music community, which makes up over a quarter of the UK’s recorded music market. Now in its 23rd year, AIM’s members range from the largest, most respected record labels and associated music businesses in the world to DIY or self-releasing artists and the next generation of entrepreneurs in music – including 4AD, Beggars Group, Black Acre, CTRL Music, Dirty Hit, Domino Recording Co, Hospital Records, Killing Moon Group, FAMM, Ninja Tune, Numbers, Transgressive, Secretly Canadian, Supernature, Warp and XL Recordings. 

AIM exists to level the playing field for UK independent music businesses – the beating heart of music, ensuring the voice of the independent community is heard and actively listened to by Government, policymakers and industry stakeholders across industry-wide issues.

EXPERIENCE

An understanding of the workings of the music industry and how to influence political change. Familiarity with media and the creative industries and the ability to communicate an effective strategy to the wider world.

Strong networking ability together with the personal credibility to represent the organisation and to establish constructive working relationships with all stakeholders across the UK.

Experience in leading, motivating and developing a diverse team, planning and budgeting skills and the ability to grasp complex issues and create forward looking plans and initiatives. Excellent communication and listening skills with a collaborative approach.

Key Responsibilities  Strategic Leadership
Develop short, medium and long term strategic vision for AIM

Consult with the AIM Board, Membership and wider community to formulate policy and develop resources to best support and promote the interests of the independent music community

With the board, collaboratively establish business direction that supports AIM’s strategy, operating and budget plans, and forward vision.

To position AIM as a thought leader on key commercial issues as well as driving and supporting meaningful programmes in social justice and sustainability

To identify key strategic partners and stakeholders and to develop meaningful relationships with them

To develop and deliver strategies to ensure AIM’s financial sustainability

To continue to ensure AIM’s relevance to its community, retain and grow membership in existing and emerging independent music businesses  

Representation

To represent AIM and its community on industry boards and other committees / structures, including with government and other stakeholders, such as UK Music, IMPALA, Worldwide Independent Network, PPL, Creative UK, Creative Industries Council

To be a visible spokesperson in specialist music publications, national and international press to promote AIM’s key priorities in the interests of its community

To speak at industry conferences and other events in the UK and abroad to promote AIM’s profile and the interests of its community  

Operational Leadership

To be an effective role model for others, successfully motivating the AIM team, founded in a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion.

To implement organisational structures and reporting lines that optimise productivity and wellbeing in the team to perpetuate a positive and supportive culture

To ensure a focus on equality, diversity and inclusion across the executive board, sub committees and within the AIM team, events, conferences and campaigns.

To oversee the delivery of key AIM projects including events, conferences, digital infrastructure and advocacy campaigns

To ensure ongoing and effective communication strategies with Members, the wider independent music community and other stakeholders
Experience and Qualifications  Credible leader with gravitas who guides and motivates with a compelling vision, instilling in others knowledge, confidence, optimism and fostering co-operation and trust

Relevant scale of people leadership experience, with demonstrable record of continuous improvementProven ability in developing and delivering complex cost-effective service propositions to a broad set of stakeholders/ customers which have improved business performance

Proven ability to deliver financial targets to include revenue generation via invoice, cash collection and debt management

Proven experience in working in an entrepreneurial music environment with multiple stakeholders

Proven stakeholder management skills where varied stakeholder groups need to be consulted and alignment reached, preferably at Board or committee level

Experienced at balancing external political and legal perspectives on key issues, whilst delivering great customer service, the internal needs of customers and meaningful organisational culture

Comfortable with leading diverse teams through times of change, culture transformation and therefore possible uncertainty

A strong commercial and strategic mind with the ability to think, plan ahead and anticipate market developments; and to be resilient and responsive to unexpected developments

Draws on skills, expertise and knowledge of diverse stakeholders to make informed decisionsProven ability to create and communicate business development proposals and strategies

Proven ability for capacity planning in a complex environment

Educated to degree level or higher. Continuing professional development in business, such as a MBA an advantage
